General Plan

For my experiment I will be doing which pain killer dissolves the fastest in a bowl of body temp. water. First I will place a variety of pain killers in their own individual bowls of water. Then I will time how long it takes for the pain killers to dissolve. That is when I will be able to see which pain killer works the fastest.

Background Research

Pain killers affect your body in many ways. Each pain killer has different ways of easing different pains. By me using a variety of pain killers I was able to see how long a pain killer takes to affectively work in the human body.
Do not take more than directed. Adults and children 12 years and over; take 1 capsule every 4 to 6 hours while symptoms persist. If pain or fever does not respond to 1 capsule, 2 capsules may be used. Do not exceed 6 capsules in 24 hours, unless directed by a doctor. The smallest effective dose should be used. Children under 12 years: ask a doctor.
Warnings: Allergy Alert: Ibuprofen may cause a severe allergic reaction which may include hives, asthma (wheezing), facial swelling or shock. Stomach Bleeding Warning: Taking more than recommended may cause stomach bleeding. Alcohol Warning: If you consume 3 or more alcoholic drinks every day, ask your doctor whether you should take ibuprofen or other pain relievers/fever reducers. Ibuprofen may cause stomach bleeding. Do not use if you have ever had an allergic reaction to any other pain reliever/fever reducer. Ask a doctor before use if you have problems or serious side effects from taking pain relievers or fever reducers stomach problems that last or come back, such as heartburn, upset stomach, or pain ulcers bleeding problems high blood pressure, heart or kidney disease, are taking a diuretic, or are over 65 years of age Ask a doctor or pharmacist before use if you are under a doctor's care for any serious condition taking any other product that contains ibuprofen, or any other pain reliever/fever reducer taking a prescription drug for anticoagulation (blood thinning) taking any other drug When using this product take with food or milk if stomach upset occurs. Stop use and ask a doctor if an allergic reaction occurs. Seek medical help right away. pain gets worse or lasts more than 10 days, fever gets worse or lasts more than 3 days stomach pain or upset gets worse or lasts redness or swelling is present in the painful area any new symptoms appear. If pregnant or breast-feeding, ask a health professional before use. It is especially important not to use ibuprofen during the last 3 months of pregnancy unless definitely directed to do so by a doctor because it may cause problems in the unborn child or complications during delivery. Keep out of reach of children. In case of overdose, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center right away.
Aspirin is used to relieve many kinds of minor aches and pains—headaches, toothaches, muscle pain, menstrual cramps, the joint pain from arthritis, and aches associated with colds and flu. Some people take aspirin daily to reduce the risk of stroke, heart attack, or other heart problems.
Aspirin-also known as acetylsalicylic acid-is sold over the counter and comes in many forms, from the familiar white tablets to chewing gum and rectal suppositories. Coated, chewable, buffered, and extended release forms are available. Many other over-the-counter medicine contain aspirin. Alka-Seltzer Original Effervescent Antacid Pain Reliever, for example, contains aspirin for pain relief and sodium bicarbonate to relieve acid indigestion, heartburn, and sour stomach.
Aspirin belongs to a group of drugs called salicylates. Other members of this group include sodium salicylate, choline salicylate, and magnesium salicylate. These drugs are more expensive and no more effective than aspirin. However, they are a little easier on the stomach. Aspirin is quickly absorbed into the bloodstream and provides quick and relatively long-lasting pain relief. Aspirin also reduces inflammation. Researchers believe these effects come about because aspirin blocks the production of pain-producing chemicals called prostaglandins.
In addition to relieving pain and reducing inflammation, aspirin also lowers fever by acting on the part of the brain that regulates temperature. The brain then signals the blood vessels to widen, which allows heat to leave the body more quickly.
Prescription ibuprofen is used to relieve pain, tenderness, swelling, and stiffness caused by osteoarthritis (arthritis caused by a breakdown of the lining of the joints) and rheumatoid arthritis (arthritis caused by swelling of the lining of the joints). It is also used to relieve mild to moderate pain, including menstrual pain (pain that happens before or during a menstrual period). Nonprescription ibuprofen is used to reduce fever and to relieve mild pain from headaches, muscle aches, arthritis, menstrual periods, the common cold, toothaches, and backaches. Ibuprofen is in a class of medications called NSAIDs. It works by stopping the body's production of a substance that causes pain, fever, and inflammation.
Pain killers can help get rid of pain and body aches.

Detailed Procedure

1. lay out all the pain killers
2. fill four bowls of water at the temperature of 98.6 degrees
3. one at a time place each pain killer in their own individual bowl
4. start the timers
5. once the pain killers have completely dissolved, stop the timer set up next to your bowl

Data Analysis

The pain killers tested: Ibuprofen, Aspirin, Ibuprofen gel capsule, and Acetominophen
It was hypothesized that the Ibuprofen gel capsule would dissolve the fastest, in result to my experiment the regular Ibuprofen dissolved the fastest in less than four minutes.

Conclusion


It is hypothesized that the Advil capsule will dissolve the fastest? What I can conclude from my experiment is that the Ibuprofen is the fastest dissolving, therefore it is the fastest acting pain reliever.







Discussion

My data started off very steady, and then went up very drasticlly. By me conducting this experiment I will be able to come up with which pain killer works the fastest once in the human body. This will allow the community to see how long the pain killer takes to affectively work in their body, and decide which pain killer is the best for them. In the end the Ibuprofen dissolved the fastest. It was hypothisized that the Ibuprofen gel capsule would be the first to dissolve. By the end of my experiment I was able to see the reults of each pain killer and the gel capsule was the one that took the longest.



Benefit to Community and/or Science

My experiment benefits the community. For my experiment I am testing which pain killer dissolves the fastest in a bowl of body temperature water. By me conducting this experiment I will be able to come up with which pain killer works the fastest once in the human body. This will allow the community to see how long the pain killer takes to affectively work in their body, and decide which pain killer is the best for them.
